Let’s talk about the election of 2004. As you will remember, by that time we all knew that there were no weapons of mass destruction anywhere in Iraq. Then why did the United States not apologize, repair the damage, and withdraw? Why, for heaven’s sake, did the Democratic Party put on a militaristic display at its national convention in Boston, nominating its candidate to martial music under the slogan, “Reporting for Duty”? The electorate had the choice between one party that began a war of aggression, and another that promised to prosecute the war better than the party that started the war. In 2006 the Democrats took control of both Houses of Congress. They ran on a platform of opposition to Bush’s war. Yet, since then, the war has been escalated, and funds for it have been provided, like clockwork, by a Congress controlled by Democratic leadership. How is this possible? It has happened because corporate interests determine the policies of both the Republican and Democratic parties. The two parties have taken turns, since World War II, in sending our troops into combat abroad, in repeated violation of the Constitutional requirement that only Congress can declare war. Forty years ago two Democratic Presidents invaded Vietnam, followed by a Republican who invaded Cambodia. The present President boasted, in his State of the Union address, of the assassination of a suspected terrorist by drone aircraft on Yemeni soil – a terrorist act itself – to standing applause from both parties in both Houses of Congress. We have become the military-industrial complex President Eisenhower warned us of in his Farewell Address in 1960. Both major political parties have co-operated in the placement of over seven hundred U.S. military bases on foreign soil around the world. You can vote against this militaristic empire, but you cannot do so by voting for a Democratic party politician. I am a high-school math teacher who served two years in federal penitentiary in 1970-1972 for refusing the military draft during the Vietnam War. I am running for Congress on the Green Party platform. I am committed to a platform of real democracy, of equality for all not only before the law but also in their human rights. We are pledged, Green Party members, to work for sustainable local economic activity, for a culture that celebrates contributions from all of its members, of whatever group, and that honors nonviolent solutions which include responsible behavior by government agents. We propose replacing the rapacious exploitation of the resources of the planet and its human population with an intelligent accommodation by the optimal use of technology for the highest quality of life for all. At a minimum, that requires health care as a human right. A Vote for Meo Is A Vote for Peace.
